Qualceram,(Formerly Noritake/Arklow Pottery), Co. Wicklow

This 13 acre site consists of the Qualceram bathroom furnishing manufacturing plant, and the older Noritake/Arklow Pottery plant which dates from the 1930sand was acquired by Qualceram in 1998. From what I can gather, the premises was sold in 2008 for €30 million, with the intent of relocating the works to an alternative site in Arklow. Despite all of this, the company went into liquidation in 2009 There are several areas where attempts have been made to start fires... The Read more [...]

St. Andrew’s Church of Ireland, Co. Galway

St. Andrew's Church of Ireland is located in rural County Galway. Like many other similar churches in Ireland, it was built with assistance from the Board of First Fruits, who, in the nineteenth century, aimed to place a church or chapel within a reasonable distance of everyone in Ireland. St. Andrew's was built c.1820, and likely served the parish for a century or more. It's not clear when it fell into disuse, but it was probably during the first half of the twentieth century. The small graveyard Read more [...]

Silvermines, Co Tipperary

I've been meaning to visit these mines for the last 5 years so it was about time I eventually got my arse in gear! Myself, Storysham and a couple of friends made the trip out to the old lead mining complex to explore the remaining above ground structures and the mine network below ground. As far as I know all mining work finished in this complex in the 1980s and it has been left abandoned ever since. Above ground remains the site manager's house, a collection of buildings full to the brim with Read more [...]

Slievenakilla Coalmines, Co Leitrim

Visited Slievenakilla Coalmines with Infectious Disease and a few times on my own before hand. The mine was originally owned by 2 people and they shut just before the 1980's. Most of the mines had been blasted shut except for the old mine entrances. These entrances are tight but once inside you can walk a good few hundred feet but its very dangerous with cave ins and its very clostraphobic. A view from the mine entrance. The tight entrance which is one of 2 that exist. The Read more [...]

Ballinatray Lodge, Courtown, Co. Wexford.

This house was originally the gate lodge to the Earl of Courtown's demense. The house has been extended to the rear several times and was habited until the late 90's/early 2000's, when planning permission was granted to develop the site as a single storey restaurant. The house recently returned to the market with an asking price of €198,000. Although this beautiful building is listed, its beautiful ornate timber facades are rapidly rotting away, and its future remains uncertain.     Read more [...]

Convent Of Mercy, Co Clare

This is an old abandoned convent  in Co.Clare – it has been hard to find out much about the history of it, as there is very little on the internet or library. It was built in the 1860s by the sisters of mercy and used as a school for girls.  In the early 20th century it saw use as an orphanage, and later as a school – which was what it was when it eventually closed down. It is not clear at what stage the building was deserted, but I believe it to have been some time between 15 and 25 Read more [...]

The Country Club, Brittas Bay, Co. Wicklow.

I stumbled upon this place by accident on my way back from a different site. What appeared to be a derelict farmyard with some badly deteriorated mobile homes alongside, turned out to be much more. I couldn't find much information on the place apart from its name and that it was running until 1984 or 1985. I also gathered that its owner was in trouble several times for serving underage drinkers, which may or may not have contributed to its eventual demise. Its one of the most surreal places I've Read more [...]

St. Helen’s/Great Southern Hotel, Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.

St. Helen's Hotel occupies a prominent position on a clifftop overlooking Rosslare Europort. Since its closure in late 2010, the site has been stripped of anything of any value and allowed to go to rack and ruin. The owners of the building were granted permission in October 2010 to demolish the 43 year old structure and construct 25 apartments to be used as sheltered accommodation for the elderly. To date, no work has been carried out and the site has become a safety hazard and a magnet for anti Read more [...]

Glyde Court, Co Louth

Glyde Court is a late 18th Century house with a long elevation remodeled in late Jacobean style in the 19th Century. Ancestral home of the Foster family, the Fosters stemmed from the Rev. Dr Thomas Foster, rector of Dunleer. Dr Thomas Foster's son, John Thomas Foster, married Lady Elizabeth Hervey, who later famously lived ménage-a-trios with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire before marrying the Duke in 1809. From her marriage to John Thomas Foster, Lady Elizabeth bore two children, Frederick and Read more [...]
